RPP Settles Municipal Fine After Royal Welcome Rally: A Gesture of Compliance

Kathmandu,– In a move signaling adherence to municipal regulations, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has settled a fine of 100,000 Nepali Rupees imposed by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). This penalty stemmed from alleged violations during a recent demonstration held to welcome former King Gyanendra Shah.

RPP spokesperson Gyanendra Shahi confirmed the payment, sharing photographic evidence of the transaction via social media. In his accompanying statement, Shahi emphasized the party's commitment to "good governance and the rule of law." He acknowledged the potential for incidental damage during the large-scale gathering, stating, "The millions of parents and brothers and sisters who came to welcome the king must have stepped on something on the road while walking. We accept the decision of the metropolitan municipality."

The KMC had levied the fine, citing instances of littering and damage to public railings during the welcome rally. Notably, while the demonstration involved several pro-monarchy factions, including RPP Nepal and activist Durga Prasai, the KMC's penalty was specifically directed at the Rajendra Lingden-led RPP.

This development raises interesting questions about the enforcement of municipal regulations during large public gatherings. The RPP's decision to comply, despite the multi-party nature of the event, suggests a willingness to uphold civic responsibilities. This also raises questions as to why only one party was fined.

The situation also underscores the delicate balance between the right to assemble and the obligation to maintain public order and cleanliness. The RPP's payment, while perhaps a pragmatic decision, also serves as a public acknowledgment of the KMC's authority. This event showcases the current political climate, and how parties deal with fines levied against them.
